The Sweetest Shop on Newbury Street

By Madeleine Tennent

Georgetown Cupcake has reached Boston. Stroll down Newbury Street and see the crowd of people waiting outside; stop in and see what the hype is about. Two sisters, Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne, are co-founders of the aspiring cupcake franchise. The sisters are nationally famous for their own hit series, DC Cupcakes, on TLC. The franchise has also been recognized across a plethora of media. Berman and LaMontagne have been on Oprah in 2010 as well as Martha Stewart in 2011 and have had articles written on their accomplishments in The Washington Post and The New York Times.

The cupcake sensation is traveling countrywide. Georgetown Cupcake on Newbury Street was brought to Boston just recently in June 2012. Berman and LaMontagne started their business in Washington, D.C., in 2008 and are continuing to spread the joy across the country. They currently have four open shops: one in Bethesda, Maryland, just northwest of their initial store in D.C., one in SoHo, New York, and one most recently in Boston. The sisters are even opening their newest store in Los Angeles this fall and expanding to Atlanta in spring 2013.

The Boston shop boasts a giant display of freshly baked cupcakes in every flavor and design, greeting patrons as they enter the shop. The feminine interior décor is bright with pink, purple, and yellow. Upbeat songs play in the background, giving the store a charming and inviting quality.

Georgetown Cupcake is a bakery that specializes only in cupcakes and makes the visit fun and exciting. When ordering, customers can choose between single orders, a half dozen, or a full dozen cupcakes. Choosing one cupcake can seem nearly impossible. Each cupcake is decorated individually and the designs are simple and sweet. The menu offers a variety of flavors that include classic chocolate and vanilla as well as more unique flavors like coconut and lemon berry. The store offers a gluten-free option, too, for those with allergies. The menu changes daily, making each trip to Georgetown Cupcake unique. There is even an option to try Berman and La Montagne’s personal favorites: salted caramel and chocolate hazelnut. For the indecisive, red velvet is the store’s best seller nationwide.
